Models of Care

Excellence Awards spotlights 51 finalists who represent nursing's 'best of the best'

Talk about role models. Fifty-one inspiring nurses from the Midwest fit the bill, and they just happen to be the region's finalists in NURSEWEEK's 2003 Nursing Excellence Awards.

The winners in each of the eight categories will be announced Sept. 8; those selected as finalists by a panel of 12 nurses are being honored with profiles in this issue.

The 47 women and four men deserve recognition for their involvement in activities ranging from extraordinary community outreach to leading-edge clinical care and innovative research to supportive mentoring and teaching.

Katherine Vestal, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, regional vice president for the Midwest editions of NURSEWEEK and leader of the awards judging process, said the finalists represent "the best of the best" of nurses who practice today.

"They are innovative, creative, giving and compassionate," Vestal said. "And above all, they are experts in their fields and have raised the bar on the quality of care and services that are delivered to patients, families and the communities they are part of."

Vestal said she was impressed by the accomplishments of these nurses, who were nominated by their peers. Each has made contributions to advance the nursing profession and NURSEWEEK congratulates the 51 finalists on their achievements.
