Bill requiring providers to disclose RN staffing levels is introduced in Congress
Congressional lawmakers recently introduced a bill to require healthcare institutions to disclose nurse staffing levels.
The bill, HR 1165, also would guard against whistle blower retaliations against hospital employees and provide for more government oversight of conversions and acquisitions by HMOs and hospitals, ensuring that nurses are at the table when merger deals are discussed. It has the backing of the American Nurses Association (ANA).
Supporters have dubbed the measure the Patient Safety Act of 1997. They said the measure would help ensure healthcare decisions are based primarily on patients well-being and not market factors.
This legislation lifts the veil of secrecy that keeps hospitals staffing and outcomes a mystery to patients ... and protects nurses who speak out on behalf of safe patient care, said ANA President Beverly L. Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN.
