A
popular cold remedy ingredient has been linked to a rare but deadly
type of stroke, and as a result, the Food and Drug Administration
asked drug companies yesterday to voluntarily discontinue its use.

ingredient called phenylprapanolamine, or PPA is used in dozens

Consumer Healthcare Products Association, the organization that
represents makers of nonprescription drugs, said its members are
reviewing the advisory and will make separate decisions on the use
of PPA in its products.
The
FDA’s concern about PPA is based on a five-year Yale University
study that made a connection between PPA and an increased risk of
hemorrhagic stroke.
