FDA warns of cold remedy ingredient

A popular cold remedy ingredient has been linked to a rare but deadly type of stroke, and as a result, the Food and Drug Administration asked drug companies yesterday to voluntarily discontinue its use.

The ingredient – called phenylprapanolamine, or PPA – is used in dozens of cough and cold medications, including such brand names as Alka-Seltzer and Robitussin CF. The FDA has warned consumers to stop using any products that contain PPA.

The Consumer Healthcare Products Association, the organization that represents makers of nonprescription drugs, said its members are reviewing the advisory and will make separate decisions on the use of PPA in its products.

The FDA’s concern about PPA is based on a five-year Yale University study that made a connection between PPA and an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
