Concerned that there won’t be enough flu vaccine to go around, the
government has ordered 9 million more doses from manufacturers.
The CDC is saying
that though reports of the flu are already starting to come in,
the rates across the states are still low.
Production of
the vaccine was slowed this year when several of the manufacturers
had difficulty growing one of the flu strains, thus causing delays
in delivery. As a result most people have been told to wait until
December to save the available supply for those most at risk.
The CDC is saying
that it wants to make sure that there is as much vaccine available
as there was last year, and has asked manufacturers to give priority
to those orders intended for high-risk groups.
So far, this
season, the CDC has reported that about 28 percent of this year’s
75 million doses of flu vaccine have already been shipped, with
the rest to be shipped in November and December.
