Hospital pagers signal germs

New York. Germs swarm around hospitals, and according to a letter published in the October issue of the American Journal of Infection Control, sick patients aren’t the only ones to blame.

Researchers now are saying that dirty electronic pagers worn by hospital staff could contribute to the spread of infection from patient to patient.

According to the study, 36 pagers belonging to doctors were found to carry bacteria, and almost half of those carried at least one disease-causing bug.

A physician familiar with the study said he hoped the results would encourage health care workers to wash their hands more thoroughly.
