The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will see
an increase in its budget for fiscal year 2001 after the Department
of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Committee on Blood Safety
and Availability voted Thursday to make the American public aware
of the dangers of the Hepatitis C virus.
The
initiative stems from the efforts of Surgeon General David Satcher,
M.D., who wants more Americans to take notice of the disease that
infects almost 4 million Americans.
The
question now is how best to deliver the message. Satcher had originally
intended to mail a letter to citizens regarding Hepatitis C at a
cost of $30 million.
However,
committee members are reluctant to watch that amount of money spent
on paper and ink and instead feel the money in the budget would
be better spent on television spots during popular programs, such
as the Super Bowl.
