Washington. The maker of Norplant System contraceptive kits– six capsules that are surgically implanted beneath the skin and provide contraceptive protection for five years– has stopped shipment of the kits while the company investigates the shelf-life stability of specific lots of the product.

Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals issued a letter to health care providers advising them to stop implanting their patients with Norplant Systems that were shipped from eight specific lots beginning in October of last year with an expiration date of 2004.

The company requested that health care providers keep suspect lots until officials complete additional stability testing, which will take one to two months.

As an added precaution, Wyeth-Ayerst is asking health care providers to discuss nonhormonal contraceptives with their patients already implanted with Norplant Systems with a 2004 expiration date.
