Stanford nurses agree to contract

Palo Alto, Calif. Stanford Hospital and Clinics and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital soon will return to normal after 1,730 nurses ended their 51-day strike yesterday. The nurses agreed on a contract that gives them more leverage in patient care decisions but less in yearly pay raises than they had argued for.

The contract was narrowly approved by 15 votes over the required 825 'yes' votes needed to ratify the agreement.

Under the contract, the nurses' salaries will increase 5 percent annually in the two-year agreement. The nurses had originally pushed for 7.5 percent pay raises, while hospital officials countered with 4 percent increases.

The strike was the first for the union since 1974.
