Rockville,
Md. Three more universities have signed up with Celera Genomics
to gain access to its genetic databases, and the gene company, which
is finalizing a map of the human genome, hopes hundreds of more
universities will subscribe.
The
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, the University
of Cincinnati and Ohio State University, join Harvard and Vanderbilt
University as Celera clients, the company announced yesterday.
Financial
terms of the deals have not been disclosed, but Celera has sold
its services to drug companies for as much as $15 million a year.
The
university deals reflect a growing change of heart toward the gene
company, which was openly criticized by academics as it competed
against the government-backed Human Genome Project to piece together
a map of the human genome.
