The nation's top health insurers said yesterday that they would
combine resources to stop the paperwork hassles that have become
the notorious trademark of HMOs.
More
than 20 health insurance companies, including Cigna Corp. and Aetna
Inc., said they would standardize their paperwork and procedures,
with the goal of providing a standard grid of benefits in the next
year that will make it easier for consumers to compare plans during
enrollment.
But
skeptics said the announcement is nothing more than an effort by
the HMOs to fend off federal legislation that would give consumers
the power to sue for inadequate health care.
A
spokesman for one of the HMOs in the new partnership, which collectively
represents about 100 million Americans, said the move was "not a
public relations exercise and is in no way focused on activities
in Washington."
