Francisco. A federal judge ruled yesterday that the Oakland
Cannabis Buyers' Cooperative could resume serving sick people, such
as AIDS and cancer patients, who would suffer "imminent harm" without
cannabis.
U.S.
District Court Judge Charles Breyer said the government had failed
to show why some people should be barred from using the drug as
a medicine.
Jeff
Jones, executive director of the Oakland club, said Breyer's ruling
opened the first legal loophole in federal laws banning any use
of marijuana.
Gretchen
Michael, a spokeswoman for the Justice Department, said officials
are reviewing Breyer's decision and had no immediate comment.
