New funds for diabetes treatment

Washington. President Clinton announced yesterday that the National Institutes of Health and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation would give $5 million toward a promising treatment for diabetes.

The money will be divided among 10 centers that are exploring a new technique for transplanting cells in the pancreas.

The procedure, called islet transplantation, was tested at the University of Alberta on patients with severe Type 1 diabetes. The patients' blood sugar levels have remained normal even without their regular doses of insulin.

The 18-month clinical trials will begin this fall on 40 patients aged 18 to 65 who have difficulty controlling their blood sugars even on a strict insulin regimen.
