President Clinton announced yesterday that the National Institutes
of Health and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation would give $5 million
toward a promising treatment for diabetes.
The
money will be divided among 10 centers that are exploring a new

procedure, called islet transplantation, was tested at the University
of Alberta on patients with severe Type 1 diabetes. The patients'
blood sugar levels have remained normal even without their regular
doses of insulin.
The
18-month clinical trials will begin this fall on 40 patients aged
18 to 65 who have difficulty controlling their blood sugars even
on a strict insulin regimen.
