The head of the largest trade group of corporate nursing homes testified
to the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee's
employment safety subcommittee that no new federal mandates are
needed to combat back injuries because the injuries have declined
by about 17 percent since 1993.
The
revelation comes as members in Congress and their health care industry
allies battle the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration's
attempts to redesign most of the country's work sites by reducing
tasks that could lead to back and muscle damage.
Defenders
of the new regulations contend the safety measures would ultimately
improve patient care and better protect the workforce.
