The operating room will have a new helping hand after the Food and
Drug Administration announced yesterday it had given approval to
the Da Vinci Surgical System, the nation's first robotic surgical
device.
The
three-armed assistant will help surgeons better perform laparoscopic
surgery, and is already being tested on more delicate surgeries,
such as heart valve replacements.
Da
Vinci could one day improve microsurgery because of its precise
movements in tiny spaces, FDA experts said.
Da
Vinci's specialized arms mimic the movement of the surgeon's hands
as it is controlled from a computer next to the patient, and uses
multiple lenses to give surgeons a three-dimensional image from
inside the patient's body.
