York. Prompted by a severe drain in U.S. blood supplies, the
American Red Cross is asking people nationwide to donate blood.
The
organization said demand from hospitals has increased dramatically,
leaving some regions with less than a day’s supply of some blood
types. "A blood shortage is a disaster, and we need the same
level of public support for this disaster as we do for a hurricane,
tornado, flood or fire," said Red Cross President Bernadine
Healy, MD.
Summer
months are usually slow for blood donations because students, a
major source of those donations, are on vacation. But while donations
lag, traumas, such as car accidents, increase in the summer, according
to the Red Cross.
