Vice President Al Gore didn't hold back yesterday when he
ripped into Republican presidential rival Gov. George W. Bush for
risking the loss of $449 million in children's health insurance
program (CHIP) funding in his home state of Texas.
In a statement
released by his campaign, Gore said the "oversight is consistent
with Gov. George Bush's neglect for children without health insurance
in Texas."
Gore singled
out Texas when many other states, such as President Clinton's home
state of Arkansas, have not spent their money as well, Bush campaign
spokesman Dan Bartlett said.
States have
three years to use the federal money they were allotted. Funds from
1997 not used by Sept. 30 will be forfeited.
The Texas Legislature,
which met a year after the program was enacted, moved quickly to
implement the program once it reconvened, Bartlett said.
