
AHCPR funds research on referrals in managed care and on improving primary care services
Thirteen research projects -- eight on the referrals of patients in managed care plans and five on improving primary care services -- received funding from the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research.
Projects focusing on how the referral of primary care patients to medical specialists and other specialized services affects the quality and cost of health care received a total of $4.79 million. The projects are:
- Specialty referrals among California physician groups, Kaiser Foundation Research Institute, Oakland, Calif.;
- Unmet need and use of vision care by Medicare beneficiaries, University of California, Los Angeles;
- Nephrologist care and outcomes in renal insufficiency, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston;
- Specialty care in closed vs. open access HMOs, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia;
- Referrals in primary care, Highland Hospital, Rochester, N.Y.;
- Managed care and the primary-specialty care interface, Ambulatory Sentinel Practice Network, Denver, Colo.;
- Analysis of physician referrals of Medicare patients, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa.; and
- Patterns of referral and care for children on Medicaid, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
A total of $3.54 million will fund research on improving primary care. Projects receiving grants were:
- Couples' preference for prostate cancer screening, University of Texas Medical Branch, at Galveston, Texas;
- Prevention and competing demands in primary care practice, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha;
- Effective organization of adolescent health services, University of Rochester School of Medicine, Rochester, N.Y.;
- State service-contingent programs for health providers, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and
- Health education in an HMO: effectiveness and efficiency, University of New York, Albany
