The School Nurse site is a Web resource for nurses and other health professionals who are concerned with providing a safe and healthy school environment. Nurses can register for a free weekly e-mail newsletter that provides the latest in school health information.

The weekly "School Nurse-Zine" offers an e-mail update that covers a single topic of interest to school nurses, and topics vary from clinical developments to administrative and legal issues. The school nurse archive provides an alphabetized library of articles and past issues from the "School Health Alert" newsletter.

In a nutshell

The National Association of School Nurses Web site offers links and resources for school nurses. The mission of the association is "to advance the delivery of professional school health services to promote optimal learning in students." It was organized in 1979 and has more than 11,000 members. The group provides professional certification and credentialing for school nurses. Information about studying and testing for certification is available on the site.

Members of the association can join other school nurses for Internet discussions and read The Journal of School Nursing online.

Now hear this

The National Association of School Nurses for the Deaf was founded in 1992 as a resource for nurses who work with deaf students. Through its Web site, the group provides an opportunity for nurses who work with the deaf to network and meet.

A more general site with resources for nurses, parents and children with disabilities is the Band-Aids and Blackboards site. This site was developed by Joan Fleitas, Ed.D., RN, and provides easy-to-read resources for children growing up with a medical problem and those who support them.

Make no mistake

In 1999, the Institute of Medicine released a report estimating that as many as 98,000 patients die each year as the result of medical errors in hospitals. After that report was issued, a federal initiative was launched in an attempt to reduce medical errors and improve patient safety.

The Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality was formed to support, conduct and disseminate research to improve health care outcomes. This site contains press releases, speeches, legislative testimony, fact sheets and quality guidelines for health care safety and a link to the Morbidity and Mortality weekly rounds.

Health hazards

The Healthy School Environments Web page, part of the federal Environmental Protection Agency site, provides a list of online resources to help school nurses and parents become educated about environmental health issues in our schools. The site reports that 53 million children and 3 million adults spend a significant portion of their day in 112,000 public and private school buildings, many of which are old and inadequately maintained.

Visitors can browse the site for information either by geographic area or topic. Topics include ventilation, asthma, chemicals, pest management, radon, asbestos, drinking water and recycling.
