The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses [http://amsn.inurse.com] is a professional organization for adult health medical/surgical nurses. The academy plans to offer a certification exam for med/surg nurses beginning in the spring.

This exam will be a means for nurses to show they have mastered med/surg nursing knowledge and skills beyond those required for basic licensure. A core curriculum and certification review course for the exam can be ordered from the site.

The academy also has a variety of position statements on topics such as code of conduct, political awareness, mandatory overtime and latex use.

In addition, the site offers online continuing education for nurses as well as links to other nursing sites and job openings.

Med magazines

The Lancet publishing company [www.thelancet.com] offers three medical journals online: Infectious Diseases, Neurology and Oncology.

These journals are excellent resources for nurses researching topics as well as those who want to keep up on the latest research and technology in their areas of expertise.

The latest journal issues, accompanied by high-quality graphics, include scientific and medical research, reflections and reaction, reviews and case studies, as well as up-to-date news briefs. Journals can be called up by edition and topics can be accessed via a search.

Elder care

The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing [www.hartfordign.org] is an organization that was formed to promote quality care for older adults and raise the level of geriatric nursing competencies in nurses. The institute offers a gerontological nurse certification exam. The certification review course can be viewed online at no charge.

Other programs offered by the institute include a geriatric interdisciplinary team planning process to improve nursing skills and knowledge and reduce hospital readmissions.

Pain in any language

Because pain is universal, the Partners Against Pain Web site [www.partnersagainstpain.com] offers pain assessment scales in 18 different languages. Additional tools available include the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale, as well as descriptive, numeric and analog pain scales.

Other tools offered include an opioid therapy documentation kit and a pain-related quality-of-life instrumentation that includes 18 different instruments to assess quality of life in people with acute, chronic and cancer pain.

In addition to these tools, the site offers extensive information on pain management techniques.

Open communication

Diversity Rx [www.diversityrx.org] is a clearinghouse of information to help health care providers and others meet the daily challenge of providing for the language and cultural needs of the diverse populations who seek care.

The site presents excerpts from experts on the topic of cultural diversity in addition to information about how culture affects the use of health care and overviews of relevant laws. It also offers examples of models used in health care settings to provide translation services to patients.
