I wish
all of you could have been with us Dec. 1 at the Nursing
Excellence Awards in Dallas. Forty-five registered nurses
were honored at the gala event that celebrated all that
is right in nursing.
We heard
story after story of nurses who go beyond the call of duty
at work and in their communities. We know that these nurses
are just the tip of the iceberg, but these examples of excellence
inspire us all. They raise our standards and extend the
horizons of nursing.
The
profiles of our finalists and winners in this issue kick
off the transition from HealthWeek to NurseWeek,
and introduce the expansion of NurseWeek into Louisiana,
Arkansas and Oklahoma.
NurseWeek
is committed to registered nurses. Our company was founded
by Dennis Riordan and Cle Rice Riordan, and has been significantly
influenced by Dennis’ twin sister, Diane Fae Cooper. Diane,
a registered nurse, worked in the staff development department
of UCLA Medical Center and served as an assistant dean at
the UCLA School of Nursing.
Diane
transmitted to Dennis, Cle and her students and colleagues
her love of being a nurse and her love of nursing. She also
instilled in them her belief that nurses are important to
society and that nurses need support, education, encouragement
and information to be successful in their work.
Although
Diane passed away in 1995, her spirit continues to live
on in NurseWeek’s commitment to nurses and the profession.
Our
mission is simple: We want to improve patient care through
nursing education and provide you with the materials and
information you need to succeed in your careers. We keep
you up to date on the latest nursing and health care news
through our magazine and our Web site, www.nurseweek.com,
which is updated daily.
We offer
continuing education opportunities in each issue of NurseWeek,
on the Web, by mail and at career fairs. To enhance and
expand our educational offerings, NurseWeek recently
acquired Concept Media, the leading producer of educational
videos and CD-ROMs for professional nursing education. Just
this month, we added a comprehensive prescription and nonprescription
drug library to our Web site, providing easy access to drug
information.
We also
provide access to job opportunities in the magazine and
online (more than 3,700 jobs are posted) and at career fairs
in major cities and communities. Online, you can create
a résumé and compare your location and salary
to those areas where you are considering moving.
Our
"Readers Respond" section in the magazine and
our online forums provide the opportunity for nurses to
discuss topics of interest and to share information and
opinions. As we witnessed at the Nursing Excellence Awards,
innovation and creativity are stimulated when we share our
ideas and accomplishments.
We need
your help in one area, though. To secure your free subscription
to NurseWeek, please return the reply card in this
issue. You will not be charged for the magazine. By returning
the reply card, you help speed delivery to yourself and
your colleagues, and you help us lower our postage costs.
With
this issue, we welcome our registered nurse colleagues in
Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas to NurseWeek and
we reaffirm our commitment to nursing. We want this to be
your magazine. Let us hear from you.
